Lauren Cheng is an artist from Hong Kong, currently based in New York.

Cheng explores the intensities of human emotion, ecstasy and sorrow through mixed media abstracted artworks. Her explorative process of laboriously layering tangible textures, bold chromatic color and dynamic mark making work together to capture the uncapturable aspects of human nature. Cheng’s ongoing struggle with anxiety and trauma greatly influences her practice, and each artwork becomes an everchanging documentation of life learnings in her journey to discover authentic connection and healing.

Cheng also creates a line of products under the name Esora, which means “painting in the sky” in Japanese. This word is a gratitude to creation and the Universe. These products were created with the intention as subtle reminders to seek the quiet beauties in life - in the smile lines of loved ones, or in the delicate sway of a dandelion, the gradient tones in a sunset, even in the strength of weeds growing through cracks in a sidewalk. All were created intentionally and wonderfully.

Cheng has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Hong Kong and New York, and her solo exhibitions include Surrender (2021) and Impermanence (2021) in Hong Kong. Her work is part of private collections in several international cities, including London, Hong Kong, Copenhagen and New York.

Cheng holds a BFA from Brown University, and is currently pursuing her MFA at New York Academy of Art in New York City.
